How to Choose Pipette Tips?
Mar 31, 2023
A pipette tip is a small, disposable plastic attachment that fits onto the end of a pipette. It is an essential tool for scientists and researchers who need to accurately measure and transfer small volumes of liquid in their experiments. Using high-quality pipette tips can make a significant difference in the accuracy and precision of experimental results. Cheap or poor pipette tips can lead to inconsistent measurements, contamination, or even damage to expensive equipment. Investing in quality pipette tips not only ensures accurate results but also saves time and money by reducing the need for repeat experiments or recalibration of equipment.
How to choose the right pipette tip?
(1) Low adsorption
When pipette tips with low adsorption pipette liquids with low surface tension, the liquid slides from the inner surface of the pipette tip very easily, leaving very little residual liquid in the pipette tip. Low adsorption tips can be applied to PCR, real-time PCR, clone sequencing, other nucleic acid processing technologies such as DNA and RNA, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and other protein analysis methods, especially suitable for handling liquids with low surface tension, such as detergents and solvents.
(2) Filter
The filter is a consumable designed to avoid cross-contamination, and is often used in experiments such as molecular biology, cytology, and virology, which helps reduce the possibility of forming smog and preventing aerosol pollution. For example, bacteria, viruses, volatile, corrosive or viscous chemicals. When pipetting samples, if the force is applied improperly, pipette tips with filter elements can prevent the liquid from entering the inside of the pipette, thereby protecting the parts of the pipette from contamination and corrosion. Therefore, the pipette with a filter is also an important tool for pipetting volatile and corrosive samples.
(3) No DNase, RNase and pyrogen
DNase and RNase are just two enzymes that can degrade DNA and RNA. "Pyrogen" mainly refers to bacterial pyrogens, which are metabolites of certain bacteria, bacterial corpses and endotoxins.
(4) Sterilization
Sterilized pipette tips are usually boxed to prevent contamination. The concept of sterility means that no contamination from other microorganisms, such as fungi, bacteria, and spores. Spores are the most difficult to eliminate.
(5) Length
Pipette tips of different specifications have different lengths and diameters, but some pipette tips of the same specification have the same length. For example, pipette tips with 200ul have a length of 51mm, 59mm and 91mm.
(6) Appearance of materials
Imported PP is used without a plasticizer and mold release agent. Otherwise, the test results will be affected by dissolved substances. The inner wall should be smooth without flow marks, and the pipette tip has no burrs, otherwise, it will lead to inaccurate drainage.
(7) Packaging
Packaging in bulk: pipette tips packaged in bulk are not sterile with 1000 pieces in a bag.
Packaging in boxes: aseptic ones are boxed with 96 pieces in a box.
Acceptance of pipette tips
(1) Weighing the amount of sample added
After rinsing the tip, repeat the sample addition operation several times; weigh the sample amount each time, and record the reading. Calculate the accuracy of the pipetting after converting the density of the test liquid into volume.
(2) Inspecting outer packaging
The packaging should be intact and undamaged, with clear markings.
(3) Inspecting the pipette tip
Check whether the pipette tip is deformed or damaged, and use an appropriate sampler to draw an appropriate amount of liquid to see if there is any leakage or blockage. After eliminating the pipette factor, if there is any abnormality, that is, the batch of pipette tips does not meet the experimental requirements of this laboratory.
