Chemical Anti-fogging of Goggles for Coronavirus
Aug 27, 2022
Under the severe situation of the coronavirus, it is an effective measure to prevent cross-infection in the hospital while saving the patient's life as a medical worker. Front-line medical staff need to wear protective tools such as medical protective masks (N95) and goggles. In clinical practice, it is found that the goggles are fogged due to the gas exhaled by the medical staff, resulting in reduced visibility of the goggles and blocked vision. There are different ways to solve this problem.
1.1 Applying iodophor
1.1.1 Principles
Iodophors consist of an amorphous combination of elemental iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone. The surface activity of iodophor can quickly adsorb the water vapor on the goggles. At the same time, iodophor has a broad-spectrum sterilization effect, which can enhance the anti-contamination of the surface of the object, thereby reducing the risk of infection to medical staff.
1.1.2 Using
Prepare clean and dry goggles. Pour medical iodophor before use. Then, turn the goggle left and right to evenly make medical iodophor coat the entire mirror surface. Pour the excess iodophor. Lay the goggles flat and let them dry completely. It takes a long time to dry the iodophor, so a dryer can be used to dry it quickly in special cases. Please note that don't apply too much iodophor, only a thin layer will do.
1.2 Applying surfactant
1.2.1 Principles
Medical hand sanitizers, soaps, and detergents all contain surfactants, which have the effect of destroying the surface tension of water droplets, making it difficult for goggles to generate fog. In addition, medical hand sanitizers also have the effect of sterilizing and inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
1.2.2 Using
The methods of using the three kinds of detergents are similar. Take hand sanitizers as an example. Wash the goggles with running water; let them dry naturally, and then use a cotton swab or gauze to evenly apply the hand sanitizer to the goggles; let it dry.
1.3 Anti-fog spray for automobile glass and swimming goggles
1.3.1 Principles
Anti-fog spray is composed of polymer active substances, which can change the surface tension of water, weaken the force between water molecules and spread out on the surface to form a uniform liquid film, thereby preventing fogging.
1.3.2 Using
After cleaning the goggles with running water, dry them with gauze; spray anti-fog spray on the surface of the goggles. Then, wipe them evenly with special anti-fog paper and remove the excess anti-fog spray around. Let the goggles dry naturally.
